Part of me wonders if the massive success of The Last Airbender and Korra on Netflix all these years later will have Netflix greenlight a fully new Avatar animated series led by its original creators, as that would be a huge draw for the service, and something that would excite Avatar fans, instead of having them be skeptical about another stab at live action. If Korra follows the same pattern, the series should be sticking around here for a long while, given that there are 52 episodes for people to get through.Īgain, despite the co-creators walking away from Netflix’s live-action Avatar series, they mentioned specifically in their goodbye letter that they didn’t want to leave the Avatar universe behind. The Last Airbender itself has finally fallen out of the Top 10, but it took several months for it to do so. Korra again, an 8 year old animated series, is beating out an impressive number of Netflix original offerings including season 2 of the Umbrella Academy, one of Netflix’s most popular series, and the debut of Teenage Bounty Hunters, which has gotten a huge amount of positive buzz since it’s release.
The only thing higher than it on the service right now is Project Power, the Jaime Foxx superhero movie, but movies tend to be flashes in the pan on Netflix as at only two hours, people watch them and move on, unlike TV shows which stay higher on the list for longer. Well, it didn’t take long for The Legend of Korra to rocket up to #2 on Neflix’s overall top 10 list and to be its #1 show. We’ll see what happens next, but for now, at least we have these two classic series in their entirety on Netflix for a while, and that’s enough. While the general consensus is that the series as a whole isn’t quite as good as The Last Airbender before it, that’s such a high bar, even getting anywhere close to it still makes for a great show.Īvatar drama rages to this day, as the co-creators of the universe just walked away from Netflix’s live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender, citing creative differences. But Korra has stood the test of time and is now getting a very well-deserved moment in the sun here on Netflix where it will be viewed by probably 50x the audience that was originally watching it on Nickelodeon.
